Dubai – From a Desert to an International City

The place where one of the busiest cities of the world, Dubai, stands today was once considered to be a useless desert. There was nothing in there but a large piece of barren land with very little population and the highest followed profession was of fishing. It was only during the second half of the previous century that the mineral wealth was begun to be explored in the Arabian peninsula and when the explorations proved to be successful, UAE also was explored and when it was found that there were huge reserves of oil in this region, this suddenly changed the complexion of the United Arab Emirates.

Immediately the Dubai administration decided to take the advantage of the situation and certainly when we look today at the sky-scrappers of the Dubai city, we can say that they were able to make full out of the opportunities. Instead of relying on the oil riches, the Caliph of Dubai along with his devoted team, decided to make it a business hub and in a very short span of time, huge projects were begun in the country. To bring the investment from different parts of the world, they made Dubai a duty free zone and this decision was taken by the international community as the best opportunity to set their feet in an Asia which certainly was and continues to be the biggest potential market because of its mammoth population.

It has been a success story from there on and during the past 40 years, Dubai has come a long way. From the brilliantly designed Dubai Marina to the tallest building on Earth, Burj Khalifa, everything depicts the progress of the city. The evolution was not easy but the resilience of the city and exceptionally good administration in terms of law and justice has made the business community around the world to believe in the strength of this city as a business hub. It is a shopping paradise where people from all parts of the world come to shop. Gold shops in the Souk here in Dubai can simply startle the person walking into the market in the evening.

Today, Dubai is one of the biggest cosmopolitans in the world as thousands of expats have been living here for years and the influx is ever increasing in the city. It is a city which has about 83% of its population comprising of the expatriates. This city offers jobs and studies to the expats and in return, they provide it with their skill and at the same time the Dubai real estate has seen new heights due to these expats entering the city every new day in big numbers. Dubai has made a separate society called as The International City which has different designs of architecture from almost all parts of the world but it is an International City in itself.
